Galaxy S22 Ultra: Samsung’s mistakes and successes in the new phone

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is a powerful cell phone, the most advanced on the market. Its datasheet is stuffed with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor , a 108-megapixel camera and much more.

With so many attributes, the question remains: what is the smartphone use experience? This intrepid journalist spent a few days playing around with the successor to the Galaxy S21 Ultra . It wasn’t possible to test everything, but it was already possible to get a sense of the successes and mistakes of Samsung in the big launch of the brand this semester – and the main rival of the iPhone 13 Pro Max .

It’s fast on almost everything

The hardware of the new Ultra leaves no doubt that Samsung is targeting a demanding consumer. The company’s management had the good sense to bring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 to the country, a way to weaken criticism and put aside the traditional controversy surrounding the Exynos chip itself .

In my experience, this version of the Galaxy S22 Ultra Ulperformed quite a variety of activities. It didn’t do more than the obligation to run smoothly the web browsing, social networks, applications like WhatsApp and Telegram , my busy calendar in Google Calendar and streaming apps.

Part of the perception of speed certainly has to do with the 6.8-inch screen. In addition to being wide, bright and with high resolution, it adopts a refresh rate ranging from 10 Hz to 120 Hz. In other words, the display can display up to 120 images in a single second. This is great for browsing apps, Android systems and even games.

The Instagram experience is still terrible

Among the highlights of the new device is the powerful set of cameras capable of taking photos of up to 108 megapixels . The front alone makes 40 megapixel records. Still, despite all the development in the field of photography, the use of Instagram remains abysmal – to the delight of Apple , which has a practically flawless version of the photo and video platform.

In this item, it must be said that Instagram seems to make little effort to adapt the app to the many Android devices out there. Still, the fact is that content creators have everything to keep turning to the rival iPhone to avoid problems.

It’s potato: just post a story captured directly with the Galaxy S22 Ultra and followers will ask what happened to the image quality. A tip for those who insist on the Galaxy is to record the content directly in the camera app, make all the edits and then just import it to Insta.

The pen has its charm

Galaxy S22 Ultra

I know many Galaxy Note widows and widowers . The cell phone line became famous for bringing news and breaking industry paradigms. It has become synonymous with productivity. To reach this level, there is no doubt that the S Pen was a beautiful decoy. Although the Note no longer exists, the S22 Ultra has a stylus for itself.

Samsung has not invented any wheels in this regard. It follows the standard of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra , with a space for the accessory. It’s better, with latency that has dropped from 9 milliseconds to 2.8 milliseconds this generation.

What to do with the pen? Mainly notes on the big screen. This feature makes it easy to print a specific area with millimetre precision. It also helps to share the screenshot already with handwritten notes. Finally, it gives a handmade tone to any image before passing it on to friends, customers, etc.

The AS Pen is also used to produce illustrations. I find it unlikely that designers, artists and creative professionals would prefer the screen of a smartphone – however large – over a tablet for this purpose. Anyway, the possibility is posed.

The Samsung Notes application is present. It’s better than ever for anyone who lives fully immersed in the Galaxy and Windows ecosystem . However, a version of the app for Mac is still due . Samsung suggested linking it to Microsoft OneDrive to view notes on Apple computers .

Users can use the pen as a remote control to release the camera’s shutter, change the lens, among other functions. This feature already existed in the Galaxy Note . Good to see you on the S line.

Always On remains very interesting

It may seem like a silly detail, but I still really like the Always On feature. It takes advantage of a feature of the 2X Dynamic AMOLED panel display that greatly reduces power consumption in images with lots of black pixels.

In practice, I have the possibility to display the clock, calendar and appointments of the day whenever the Galaxy S22 Ultra is not in use. Battery impact is minimal.

This functionality exists on other phones in the Android world and is sorely lacking on the iPhone . Who knows, maybe one day it will reach apple fans?

Expected more from the battery

The data sheet released by Samsung mentions a 5,000 mAh battery. It is not much when we consider that the market has cell phones with a component that can exceed 6,000 mAh . In other words, the fuel tank could be bigger on the Galaxy S22 Ultra .

The short testing time did not allow me to carry out more advanced experiments. I ended up choosing to try it in my most insane daily life, with many interactions on social networks, exchanging messages with sources, calls and a long period of reading on the internet. All this has a relevant impact on so-called screen time. Exchanging messages with sources, calls and a long period of reading on the internet. All this has a relevant impact on so-called screen time.

I unplugged the S22 Ultra at 100% charge. That is, it gave just over ten and a half hours of intense use. By way of comparison, there were times when the iPhone 13 Pro Max came out of the charger at the same time and managed to reach the end of the day without receiving a recharge.

Samsung alludes to a battery that “lasts beyond all day” in promotional materials. The fine print explains that the actual duration “varies based on network environment, features and applications used, frequency of calls and messages, number of charges, and many other factors.”

She is right. I believe that people with less smartphone-dependent routines – after all, I am the editor of this segment here at TechTudo – achieve more satisfactory results.

Powerful cameras

The photographic set of the Galaxy S22 Ultra is structured as follows:

  • 108 MP main ( f/1.8 , 85º and Dual Pixel AF)
  • Ultra wide 12 MP (f/2.2 and 120º)
  • A 10 MP telephoto with a f/4.9 aperture, an 11o field of view, and a 10x optical zoom
  • 10 MP telephoto lens (f/2.4, 36º and 3x optical zoom)
  • Front 40 MP (f/2.2 and 80º)

It is a versatile smartphone capable of taking good pictures in many everyday situations. Samsung continues to have a super asset in the field of digital photography.

Assuming that the photos turn out well most of the time, I highlight the so-called “nightography”, a term that mixes “night” and “photography” in English. The new Ultra has a 23% larger sensor than the previous generation, which translates into a superior ability to detect low light in the environment.

The results under drastic lighting conditions were jarring. In a meeting promoted by the brand, the room with black walls and many beams of neon light (in different colours) guaranteed beautiful, strong and reasonably defined records, even when playing with reflections.

On the other hand, the attempt to record the Full Moon in the sky of Rio de Janeiro turned into a tragedy. The celestial body became a white, blurred blur. It looked like a cheesecake.

The zoom technology remains impressive. There are two 10 megapixel telephoto cameras with 3x and 10x approximation. The portrait results are pretty good. It is worth noting, however, that excessive use of approximation can generate watercolour or somewhat blurred records.

Nowadays Apple has become a reference for the so-called cinema mode in video recording, when the person is well defined and the background gains a charming blurring effect. Samsung was a pioneer in adopting the feature in earlier models, but it was never truly good. I must say that my “portrait video” experience with the front of the S22 Ultra was quite satisfying.

Before you go away

The points above are the ones that most caught my attention in this first contact with the Galaxy S22 Ultra . There are many others that deserve closer scrutiny. Anyway, the purpose of this article is to bring you a first look at one of the most awaited products in the vibrant cell phone market.

Different models have many differences.

The line is complete with the Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy S22 Plus .
